Структура утвердительного предложения
В Past Progressive предложения строятся таким образом, как показано на схеме ниже.
Объяснение к схеме:
- S – подлежащее;
- was/were – форма прошедшего времени от глагола to be (was – для единственного числа, were – для множественного);
- Ving – глагол с окончанием -ing.
I was reading a book yesterday morning. – Вчера утром я читала книгу.

Структура вопросительного предложения
В общих вопросительных предложениях в Past Progressive вспомогательный глагол выносится в начало предложения.
Were you doing your homework when I called you? – Ты делал домашнее задание, когда я тебе позвонил?
Was he walking along the street when it started to rain? – Он шел по улице, когда начался дождь?
В специальном вопросе на первое место ставится вопросительное слово, затем идут вспомогательный глагол, подлежащее и глагол с окончанием -ing.
What were they doing when the police arrived? – Что они делали, когда прибыла полиция?
Where was he going at 5 pm yesterday? – Куда он шел вчера в пять часов вечера?
Специальный вопрос к подлежащему построить проще всего: нужно вместо подлежащего вставить Who.
Who was singing such a nice song? – Кто это пел такую красивую песню?
Обратите внимание: глагол в этом случае всегда ставится в третьем лице единственного числа, независимо от того, в каком числе стоит подлежащее в ответе.

Употребление
В английском языке существует четыре случая употребления Past Progressive. Правила звучат так:
- Прошедшее длительное время может обозначать продолжительное действие, которое происходило в прошлом в определенное время. Акцент падает не на завершение действия, а на его продолжительность. I was listening to music yesterday from 2 till 3 pm. – Вчерасдвухдотрехчасовдняяслушалмузыку.At 10 am yesterday I was having my breakfast. – Вчерав10 утраязавтракал. Следует отличать Past Progressive и Past Simple, где также указывается конкретное время. В первом случае действие длилось в определенное время, а во втором – началось или завершилось. - Past Progressive также обозначает два длительных действия, которые происходили в одно и то же время в прошлом. Глаголы, не используемые в Progressive
Однако без исключений не обойтись. Не все глаголы можно использовать в Past Progressive. Примеры, приведенные ниже, проиллюстрируют этот материал. Во временах группы Continuous (Progressive) не используются недлительные глаголы. К ним относятся:
- чувства и эмоции – to love, to adore, to hate, to like;
- обладание чем-то – to have, to possess;
- мыслительные способности – to think, to believe;
- органы чувств – to see, to smell, to hear, to taste;
- другие глаголы – to seem (казаться), to appear (казаться, оказываться), to sound (звучать).
Некоторые глаголы относятся к смешанным. У них есть несколько лексических значений, и от этого зависит выбор грамматического времени.
I was looking at the picture when suddenly somebody’s hand touched my shoulder.
He looked exhausted.
I was seeing a doctor from 9 till 10 am yesterday.
I saw him smiling.
She was smelling flowers when her husband came in.
That pie smelled strange. We decided not to eat it.
She was thinking about his words when the phone rang.
He thought it was a bad idea. Still, he couldn’t prove it.
She was weighing herself.
Mary couldn’t pick that box up. It weighed almost 70 kilos.
Особое внимание стоит уделить глаголу to be. Он также может употребляться в Past Progressive в значении «вести себя не так, как обычно».
He was very rude that evening! – В тот вечер он вел себя очень грубо! (Он всегда грубый, тот вечер не был исключением).
He was being very rude that evening! I couldn’t believe my eyes. – В тот вечер он вел себя очень грубо! Глазам своим не мог поверить (Обычно он вежливый, но в тот вечер он был грубым).
She was so quiet yesterday. Why does she always behave herself in such a way? – Она вчера была такой тихой. Ну почему она всегда себя так ведет?
She was being so quiet yesterday. Anything wrong with her? – Вчера она была такой тихой. С ней все в порядке?
Итак, Past Progressive указывает на продолжительность действия. Но важно помнить о недлительных глаголах – их использование в любом времени группы Continuous считается грубой ошибкой.

Полезные упражнения на Past Continuous с ответами и правила
Все действия в английском языке делятся на факты и длительность. Факты – это событие, окончание которого нам известно. Мы доделали уроки, выучили стихотворение, приготовили ужин.
Длительность – это процесс события, поэтапный ход действий. Окончание нам неизвестно – уроки делали (но могли что-то пропустить), а стихотворение – учили (но не выучили). Действия второго типа – все временные формы с приставкой Continuous.
Чтобы лучше закрепить это правило, начинающим нужно регулярно делать упражнения на Past Continuous в сравнении с Past Simple. Это самый яркий пример взаимодействия фактов и длительности в одном предложении.

Правила Past Continuous
Past Continuous – это:
- Длительное действие(Пример:The girl was walking to school. – Девочка шла в школу. Мы не знаем, дошла ли она. У нас есть процесс – ее поход. Это и есть Past Continuous).
- Действие в конкретный момент или период времени(The girl was walking to school at 2.45 p.m./The girl was walking to school from 2.00 p.m. to 3 p.m. – Девочка шла в школу в45 дня./ Девочка шла в школу с 2 до 3 дня).
- Действие, которое может прерываться «точным» временем в Past Simple(The girl was walking to school when the cat fell down. – Девочка шла в школу, когда кот упал).
- Past Continuous употребляется для выражения длительного действия в конкретный момент в прошлом или период времени, который может быть заменен действием в Past Simple.
- Past Continuous может употребляться для подчеркивания одновременных действий в прошлом.

- Leo and I were cooking while mom was reading a book.
- Leo and I was cooking while mom was taking a bath.
